Allan R. Millett: The Koreas in the Inter-War Years, 1945-1950

For renowned military historian Allan R. Millett, the approaching 60th anniversary of the Korean War provides an opportunity to reflect on the inter-war years in the Koreas (1945-1950).

Allan Millett is a specialist in the history of America's military policy, twentieth century wars, and military institutions. In the past decade, Millett has earned an international stature on the history of the Korean War.Among his many articles, books, and essays on the subject, The War in Korea, 1945-1950, I: A House Burning received the Outstanding Academic Book designation of the College and Research Library Association. He is also the co-author of A War to Be Won: Fighting the Second World War, which has been hailed as "the most compelling single-volume history of the Second World War ever written."

Millett is the recipient of the 2008 Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing. In their recommendation, the award committee - led by previous recipient, James McPherson - described Millett as "the dean of active U.S. military historians."

This lecture follows on Millett's appearance at the 2008 Liberty Gala in October, where he received the award. The Pritzker Military Library Literature Award recognizes a living author for a body of work that has profoundly enriched the public understanding of American military history.

He taught military history at Ohio State University for 37 years, where he served as a mentor to generations of scholars in the field. He currently serves as the Director of the Eisenhower Center for American Studies and Ambrose Professor of History at the University of New Orleans, and he is thesenior military adviser to the president of the National World War II Museum.
