Michael Doubler: The National Guard & The War on Terror: The Attacks of 9/11 and Homeland Security

Building on the success of his 2003 book Civilian in Peace, Soldier in War, author and noted historian Michael Doubler discusses The National Guard and the War on Terror, the first in a series of monographs that explores the National Guard's contributions in the first war of the 21st century.

His experiences as a soldier, scholar, and teacher prepared him well to write about American citizen-soldiers. Doubler's Closing With the Enemy: How GIs Fought the War in Europe, 1944-1945 won the Eisenhower Center's Forrest C. Pogue Prize in 1994 and the New York Military Affairs Symposium Award for "Best Book" in 1995. He is also the author of Civilian in Peace, Soldier in War: The Army National Guard, 1636-2000, which has been hailed as the definitive history of the Army National Guard. Another recent book, The National Guard: An Illustrated History of America's Citizen Soldiers, was the first ever photographic history of the National Guard. In addition, he is the author of numerous other special studies and articles for both the government and the private sector.

He served for twenty-three years on active duty as a Regular Army and full-time Army National Guard officer. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point , New York, and holds a doctorate degree in military history from The Ohio State University. In his early military assignments, he served in command and staff positions in armor and infantry units in the United States and Europe. From 1985 to 1988, he taught military history as a faculty member of the Department of History at West Point. He was assigned to the Army National Guard Directorate in Washington, D.C. during 1988-2000, serving in the force structure, mobilization, and readiness functional areas and as a speechwriter for the Chief of the National Guard Bureau. His service as a full-time Army National Guard officer began in 1991 and ended upon his retirement in 2000 as a colonel.

Doubler has appeared on several national news venues. He is a frequent commentator on The History Channel: Tales of the Gun. He has appeared on ABC World News Tonight and several broadcasts on National Public Radio. In addition, he has provided background information on Citizen-Soldiers for articles that have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe. He has been a guest lecturer at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the Army War College, the National Defense University, and at numerous historic sites, conferences, and meetings. Mike is the President and Owner of Doubler Enterprises, a commercial venture dedicated to promoting the role and contribution of citizen-soldiers throughout American history. He is a member of the Army Historical Foundation and the Society for Military History and serves on the board of directors of both the National Guard Educational Foundation and the Minuteman Institute for National Defense Studies. He is a native of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and currently resides in Alexandria, Virginia.
