"Butchers!"
Mauldin, William (1921-2003) 1967
The Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), their communist allies, and other nations decreed the United States bombings of North Vietnam as inhumane and brutal. At the same time, the National Liberation Front (Viet Cong), supported by North Vietnam, intimidated, threatened, and massacred civilians in the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). In 1967, a group of Viet Cong guerrillas systematically massacred 252 civilians in the hamlet of Đắk Sơn. Using flamethrowers and grenades, the Viet Cong destroyed the village and took hostages. The attack was carried out against ethnic Montagnard who were known for their fierce opposition to the Viet Cong. The United States found a dependable ally against the Viet Cong in the tribal Montagnards who lived in the central highlands.
