In March 1975, six years after Hồ Chí Minh’s death, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) and the National Liberation Front (Viet Cong) launched the Hồ Chí Minh campaign to finally end the war by taking Saigon, the capital of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). North Vietnam distributed propaganda aimed to make people believe everyone in South Vietnam welcomed the soldiers into the city. The United States helped evacuate more than one hundred thirty thousand refugees fleeing the oncoming communists. More than one million more Vietnamese suffered years of imprisonment in reeducation camps. Millions more fled their homeland seeking asylum in neighboring countries.
Given the purges, mass killings, and reeducation camps, employed by the communists, it bears asking if Hồ Chí Minh’s vision of a unified Vietnam for the good of the Vietnamese people was achieved.
