Howard Chandler Christy’s “New Woman” put a premium on her health. As such, she was not opposed to donning trousers and other typically male clothing for an afternoon of outdoor athletic activity. At the turn of the twentieth century, women pushed for acceptance of less restrictive clothing while they performed physically demanding tasks. Trousers became acceptable for exercise as long as women returned to their dresses for entertaining.
