Americans All!
Christy, Howard Chandler (1872-1952)1919
During World War I (1914-1918), half a million immigrants of forty-six different nationalities were drafted into U.S. military service. Many of these immigrants came from areas controlled by the Central Powers. Over eighteen percent of U.S. soldiers were foreign born, and thousands of first-generation Americans served in the military. The government worked to counteract nativist sentiment toward non-English speaking soldiers.
