Self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, or SCUBA, was used by the frogmen of both the Allies and the Axis during World War II.
Closed-circuit SCUBA was favored as it uses a rebreather to recycle unused oxygen and eliminates the tell-tale stream of bubbles that are generated by open-circuit systems.
