In spring 1881, after twenty years of service, Captain Erasmus Corwin Gilbreath briefly contemplated retirement. Gilbreath and his wife rented a house in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. However, Gilbreath, “found nothing to do.” Thus after a yearlong leave of absence, Gilbreath returned to his unit stationed at Fort Buford in Dakota Territory. Gilbreath’s family remained in Baltimore, Maryland without him until 1883.
