Erasmus Corwin Gilbreath and Son-in-Law Oliver Edwards in the Arizona Territory

Susan Gilbreath Lane Family Scrapbook Ca. 1896

Captain Erasmus Corwin Gilbreath was first stationed in Arizona in fall 1891. Gilbreath once again found himself on the frontier at Fort Huachuca and Whipple Barracks in southern Arizona. Due to heat, dusty clay roads, and fighting bands of Apaches, travel in the Arizona territory was difficult. The Apaches were among the last groups of Native Americans to be forced onto reservations.
