Page from Jack Sewell's Scrapbook

Fall 1945Photographs, Paper

This scrapbook page is from one of three volumes of photographs kept by Jack Sewell during his time in the Army. With spare time to travel, Sewell’s photographs document the destruction caused by months of bombings against Japanese cities as well as areas spared from destruction. Sewell notes that while Kyoto itself did not face Allied bombings–as a site of religious history–Osaka was not so fortunate, and while it was once a great commercial center it had since been reduced to rubble.
