Flag Raising on Iwo Jima

Correspondent Joe Rosenthal’s photograph of the flag being raised over Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945 is perhaps the most iconic image of World War II. This, the second flag to be raised, was a symbol to Marines and sailors that they had taken the island.
