LT (SEAL) Michael Murphy

Lieutenant (SEAL) Michael Murphy led a four-man SEAL reconnaissance unit that secretly infiltrated into the Hindu-Kush Mountains. Ambushed by overwhelming Taliban forces, Murphy climbed into the open, taking higher ground to transmit a call for evacuation. Wounded, he fought on, allowing one member of his squad to escape before he himself was killed on June 28, 2005. Murphy was posthumously awarded the United States Military’s highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions. He was the first person to be awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in Afghanistan and the first member of the U.S. Navy to receive the award since the Vietnam War. He was assigned to a West Coast based SEAL team.

In the days, months, and years following the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, Navy SEALs have been called upon more so than ever to employ their unique set of skills in accomplishing our nation’s most dangerous and covert operations. The photographs and stories in this room honor those SEALs who have made the ultimate sacrifice in support of the war on terror, and are displayed in chronological order of their sacrifice, from left to right. Similar displays can be found on the quarterdecks of the U.S. Navy and Naval Special Warfare Commands.
