    • William Levine was born on July 1st, 1915 in Duluth, Minnesota to Joseph and Sadie Levine. Levine graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1937 and worked in retail sale prior to being drafted into the United States Army in 1942. Levine initially attended Army Officer Candidate School and graduated in May of 1943. Being active duty, Levine served with the 34th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA) Group as an intelligence officer. During his military service with the 34th AAA Group, Levine participated in the D-Day invasion on Utah Beach and the liberation of Dachau. Levine was honorably discharged in 1946, yet continued to serve in the Army Reserve for 30 years achieving the rank of Major General. During Levine's service he received the Legion of Merit and Distinguished Service Medal. In the Army Reserves, Levine served as an officer for the XIV Corps until the corps was deactivated in 1967. Levine was then appointed commanding general of the United States Army's 85th Division (Training). Levine retired from the Army at the rank of Major General in 1975, but remained active with veterans as the chairman of a retired officers association for the Army in the Midwest. By the 1980s, Levine was speaking publicly about his experience liberating Dachau, as a soldier, American, and Jew. William Levine died in 2013 at the age of 97.
